PAKISTAN, KPK
Peshawar Barracks, originally established in the 1850s by the British East India Company after their victory in the Anglo-Sikh Wars, stands as a living relic of a bygone era. This double-storeyed barrack, constructed at a cost of 3 lac Rupees, was part of a series of four similar barracks built in 1867. The sprawling structure, covering 3 lac square feet, was designed with Victorian elegance to ensure hygienic living for British troops stationed in the region.
The barrack's storied past includes housing the regiment of the Frontier Brigade of the famed Punjab Irregular Force (PIF), later redesignated as the Punjab Frontier Force in 1865. Trained specifically for North-West Frontier Warfare, these troops played a vital role in the expansion of British operations in the region. Over the years, Peshawar Barracks became home to the re-articulated Peshawar Brigade, eventually renamed the 1st Brigade in 1918.
Post-Independence Era
After independence, Peshawar Barracks continued to serve the nation under the banner of Headquarters 7 Division and various units of 11 Corps. The barrack remained a witness to the ever-evolving history of the region.
Revival and Rebirth
In October 2024, a pivotal chapter unfolded in the life of Peshawar Barracks. After 156 years, extensive restoration works commenced, aiming to preserve the vintage charm of this historic structure and adapt it for modern use. The meticulous renovation employed a blend of traditional and contemporary construction techniques, with a commitment to minimal structural intervention.
